Cognitive Behavioral Consultants is excited to announce an upcoming opportunity to join a group in our White Plains Office designed to help and support the parents of young adults who need help regulating their emotions. This group was formed in recognition for the unique developmental demands of this life stage and the realization that parents, like their young adults, need validation and support.
This group was designed for parents of young adults who need help regulating emotions (ages 18 – 25 who are not in high school).
Many parents struggle with balancing their role as their adolescent transitions to adulthood. This is made only more complicated in young adults who are vulnerable to experiencing intense emotions and may have difficulty regulating their emotions. Parents often report they experience intense feelings of confusion, guilt, or anger over their young adult’s behavior.
This group was developed based on years of providing DBT-Informed Parenting Skills to individual families. It was designed to support parents and provide a new behavioral repertoire of skills to reduce their own emotional vulnerability while supporting their young adult, all while balancing the dialectic of being both gentle and firm. The goals of the group are to:
The 14-week group will cover such topics as mindful parenting, increasing effective communication skills, coping with emotionally intense moments, increasing effective responses and decreasing problematic behaviors, among other topics. Each group will include a review of skills use during the week, time to connect with other parents, presentation of new material, and consultation to families on a rotating basis.
